Thank you for your interest in the Pediatric Pulmonology Fellowship Program at the University of Iowa. Our program is committed to training the next generation of academic pediatric pulmonologists.

We have created an inclusive and innovative environment that is open to applicants of all backgrounds. Our goal is for fellows to have excellent clinical and research experiences while facilitating professional development through mentorship and opportunity.

Clinical Training

Our fellows receive the broad range of clinical opportunities found at larger academic centers. We have outstanding programs in cystic fibrosis, asthma, neuromuscular disease, BPD/ trach-vent, childhood interstitial lung disease, and aerodigestive care. Fellows receive procedural training in flexible bronchoscopy and can learn interventional bronchoscopy techniques from our colleagues in adult pulmonology and otolaryngology. We offer experience in lung transplant through our adult pulmonology team. Our internationally recognized NICU offers unparalleled opportunities in managing bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and pulmonary hypertension (PH). Additionally, our neuromuscular team provides exceptional care for children with complex neuromuscular conditions with opportunities to see cutting edge clinical trials and describe lung findings in less common neuromuscular disease. Our pulmonary function laboratory includes opportunities to learn spirometry, plethysmography, diffusion, multiple breath washout, impulse oscillometry, exhaled nitric oxide, and cardiopulmonary exercise testing.

Research Opportunities

We believe that research is a cornerstone of medical advancement. Our institution is home to world-class basic science research in cystic fibrosis, respiratory infections, lung imaging, chILD, gene therapy, exposure science, and primary ciliary dyskinesia. Examples of our contributions to science include the discovery CFTR as an anion channel, developing the pig and ferret animal models of CF, and the discoveries of basic mechanisms of Coronavirus and Measles virus infections. Our laboratories are now working on cures for several childhood respiratory diseases. As a fellow, you will work in state-of-the-art facilities and receive mentorship from renowned researchers, enabling you to contribute to the growing body of knowledge in pediatric pulmonology. Additionally, we have excellent opportunities in clinical research, quality improvement, medical education, and simulation that can fit applicants with a broad range of career interests.

Professional Development

Beyond clinical and research training, our program is dedicated to your professional growth. We offer weekly educational conferences that include case review, didactic lectures, journal club, and more. We have opportunities for fellows to further their education in several master’s programs. We also help facilitate presentations and attendance at regional and national conferences. Our goal is to equip you with the skills needed to become a leader in pediatric pulmonology.

We are excited to welcome passionate and dedicated individuals to our fellowship program. If you are committed to advancing the field of pediatric pulmonology and making a difference in the lives of children, we invite you to apply and join us in this rewarding journey.
