A simple antiseptic called chlorhexidine can reduce umbilical cord infections in newborns. Aamer Imdad, MD, UI assistant professor of pediatrics-gastroenterology, is lead author on the review, which found that chlorhexidine is an affordable and effective option globally in places with poor hygiene. However, dry cord care remains recommended in countries with strong health care systems and low newborn death rates.
