The Division of Cardiology at UI Stead Family Department of Pediatrics provides compassionate, family-centered, and state-of-the-art delivery of care to children and young adults with congenital and acquired heart disease. Patients are followed through the transition to adulthood.
Education
Our division provides cardiology teaching to undergraduates, medical students, residents, and fellow physicians. Our division also provides education and assistance to practicing physicians and allied health care providers throughout the state of Iowa and beyond to help with proper management and referral of patients with cardiological disorders and acquired heart diseases.
Fellowship Program
The division's ACGME accredited Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship Program of over 30 years has proven success in the development of physician researchers who practice all over the country. These dedicated fellows and outstanding faculty who mentor them comprise one of the best pediatric cardiology divisions in the country.
A Faculty-focused Academic Medical Center
UI Health Care faculty enjoy defined academic time, plus benefits like doubling your retirement contribution. With a short commute and low cost of home ownership, it's no surprise we attract the best academically trained providers.
Research
The Division of Pediatric Cardiology has a long and rich history of research aimed at bettering the lives of children.
Faculty engages in research including fetal and postnatal development of energy producing reactions in the heart; studies to determine the genetic basis of congenital heart disease. Faculty study arrhythmias as well as therapies for these conditions and evaluate the psychosocial outcomes of device therapy. Researchers explore non-invasive procedures and blood monitoring, and radiation free catheterizations.

Clinical Care
Dedicated staff have expertise in acquired heart diseases. The division provides the only expertise for electrophysiology, diagnostic, interventional and transplant services for children and youth in the state of Iowa. Skilled surgical support and exceptional critical care postoperative support have outcomes that have excellent results in national databases. The division has a multi-purpose diagnostic and interventional procedure lab which is constantly expanding and including state-of-the-art technologies.
Because Iowa is a rural state, faculty and staff share expertise with referring physicians through outreach clinics, service contracts, and telemedicine. Referring physicians and other health care providers throughout the Midwest rely on our services. Staff members are involved with families who participate in camps, walkathons, and community activities to support children with cardiac conditions and their families.
